Heads Up
The head and neck cancer research charity

It’s not too late to Sponsor one of our runners from the 2008 London Marathon

What is Heads-
Heads Up is a Charity established under the umbrella of the Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals Charitable Funds Office that was set up to fund research into the causes of head and neck cancers including those of the mouth, throat and voice box. About 8,000 people a year are affected by this type of cancer.

Who is behind the Appeal?
The Appeal was originally founded by Rogan Corbridge, Graham Cox and Amamnda Salisbury of The Oxford Centre for Head and Neck Oncology. Both Rogan and Graham are leading surgeons in the fight against these particular forms of cancer; they work in the ENT department of The Radcliffe Hospitals in Oxford.
Today, staff and patients alike form part of the Charity Committee, striving to raise money to fund the research program.

What are the Charity’s aims?
The aim of this Appeal is to fund scientists and research clinicians specifically to study head and neck cancer. It is our aim that research carried out in Oxford, with support from professors and research staff at the University, will benefit and have a great impact on patients’ lives, both now and in the future.
How may research help?
We know many of the risk factors that can cause this disease, and we know many of the signs and symptoms. Also we know some of the ways that cancer cells grow and spread to other areas of the body. The ways we seek to prevent and treat this disease is based on this knowledge. The University of Oxford has an international reputation for pioneering cancer research. We wish to use this expertise to improve our knowledge of Head and Neck cancers further. We hope that this will open the door to more effective treatments which will cure more people and have less devastating effects than current treatments.
What is our research strategy?
The aim is to fund scientists and research clinicians. We have enlisted the help and support of the professors and research staff in the University who are researching into other cancers. We have received advice, support and encouragement from the experts working in this field and due to the large number of patients that we treat in Oxford, we are in a unique position to make advances in this particular cancer. In 2007 we appointed our first research scientist, Stephan Feller. Click here to read more about Stephan and his work.
