About head and neck cancer

What is Head and Neck Cancer?

Cancers of the mouth, throat or voice box are the commonest types of Head and Neck cancer.  They can have devastating effects on the lives of both the patient and their families.  Both the disease and treatments can affect how patients look, speak, taste and swallow, thereby affecting many basic pleasures of life that most of us take for granted.

About 8,000 people develop the disease each year in England and Wales and over half are cured.  Small improvements in treatment are occurring all the time leading to better survival rates and improved quality of life following treatment but there is a pressing need for new treatments.

What are the current treatments and side effects?

Treatments vary depending upon the type and size of tumours but will invariably involve surgery followed by radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy.

You may find the patient experiences in the Heads2gether pages of interest  -  click on the button above.
